Character < and possibly > in box cause error in merge for DOCX

The attached file has a text box with the character < and >.
When extracted and merged back (e.g. using text rewritting step) the output does not open.
Removing the < and > (possibly only <) solve the error.
My guess: somehow < doesn't get escaped when it's in a text box.
