Mkvextract of 4K hevc with hdr10p encoding is corrupt

I extract an mkv video that used the hdr 10+ json for x265 encoding (and plays correctly), then remux it back into an mkv and the video does not play (black screen) - any audio muxed with it plays, and vlc knows the length of the video, but the screen remains black. Doing the exact same thing with a "normal" hevc mkv, the video plays correctly.
