API
---
The align package provides a public api that can be used to align and evenly
distribute selected objects in three dimensional space without using the
provided GUI. For that, you can use the ``AlignHandler`` object that is located
in the ``align`` module. The AlignHandler class is made public to the align
package itself and can be used like the following:
::
>>> from aligner import AlignHandler
Let's now create an align handler instance::
>>> aligner = AlignHandler()
We need to select some objects now and can then align/ distribute these. Let's
align the objects in y-axis so that all selected objects will be moved to the
top most object::
>>> aligner.align("y", "align_top")
Let's evenly distribute multiple objects along the x axis::
>>> aligner.align("x", "distribute_horizontal")

Any feedback about bug reports, feature requests, any additional ideas and
genereal feedback is highly welcome. Please send any of these to our support:

Welcome to aligner's documentation!
===================================
The aligner package provides a window to align and evenly distribute objects
in three dimensional space. Select some objects, set the axis to align or
distribute to and click the needed align or distribute button. Lock the
elements to an additional axis if required.

Installation
============
After having downloaded or cloned the aligner package, unpack it to any
location on your machine. The only thing you need to do now is adding the
aligner package root directory to the PYTHONPATH environment variable. You can
do this by updating your maya.env file using the following::
PYTHONPATH=path/to/aligner_x.x.x
For more information about setting environment variables please have a look at
the official `documentation <https://autode.sk/2VfEyZI>`_.
Verify successful installation
------------------------------
When you have successfully installed the aligner package, you should have a
new menu in your menu bar called **Scripts**. In here you will find a sub menu
called **aligner**.
.. image:: img/menubar.jpg
.. _main_window:
Main window
===========
The aligner main window contains the following sections:
.. image:: img/main_window.png
At the top you can select in which axis you want to align or evenly distribute
the objects to. You can align and evenly distribute to the X, Y and Z axis.
Below you find the following operations to choose from:
- Align Top
- align horizontally
- align bottom
- align left
- align vertical
- align right
- distribute left
- distribute horizontal
- distribute right
- distribute top
- distribute vertical
- distribute_bottom
Locking elements to additional axis
-----------------------------------
Besides enabling one axis to process on, it is sometimes necessary to lock
to an additional axis. This can be useful, when you want to evenly distribute
elements and keep the element's axis hierarchy. Have a look at the following
distribute example.
In here, we distribute the elements along the y axis.
.. image:: img/lock_startup.jpg
However, when we do so, the Y positions are not continuously raising and we
get mismatches.
.. image:: img/lock_disabled.jpg
In that case, we can enable to lock additionally to the Z-Axis and this will
now correctly distribute the elements evenly with keeping the y positions
in tact.

.. _quickstart:
Quickstart
==========
After having `installed <installation.html>`_ the aligner tool, let's now see
how to use it.
In order to use it, select some objects that you would like to align or
distribute evenly.
Launch the aligner tool from the menu bar: **Scripts -> aligner -> open**:
.. image:: img/menubar.jpg
In the following sections we will have a look at some common usage examples.
Aligning elements to the top
----------------------------
In our example, we want to align all selected elements at to the same height
in the y position of our `Cylinder1` object.
.. image:: img/align_01_startup.jpg
As we want to align to the Y-Axis, enable the **Y** axis button at the top.
Next, click the align top button.
.. image:: img/align_01_setup.jpg
All selected objects are aligned to the `Cylinder1` object. This element itself
does not alter its position.
.. image:: img/align_01_finish.jpg
Aligning elements in the middle
-------------------------------
In our next example, let's align all selected elements to the middle in the
X-axis.
Select some elements.
.. image:: img/align_02_startup.jpg
Set the Axis to **X** and choose the **align vertical** button.
.. image:: img/align_02_setup.jpg
The objects will be aligned accordingly.
.. image:: img/align_02_finish.jpg
Distribute objects along Z axis
-------------------------------
In this example, let's distribute the selected elements evenly between the
outer most objects in z axis.
Select the elements.
.. image:: img/align_03_startup.jpg
Set the Axis to **Z** and choose the **distribute right** button.
.. image:: img/align_03_setup.jpg
The objects will be distributed accordingly.
