reconsider safe browsing

you could activate the google safe browsing checks in offline mode, to get that level of protection without phoning home. Idk if that's true or how to achieve it. The concern would be unwarranted censorship, I suppose, but from a cursory search I couldn't find any credible instances of it being used for anything other than blocking actual malware. I'm as skeptical of google as (I assume) anybody else here, and the reason given in the faq for disabling it is not without merit either, but what do you think?

firstly, the new UI allows to enable safe browsing without remote checks in an easier manner than before, which is a first good step forward imo (at least for releases that didn't include it yet).

as for safe browsing overall, I'm open to discussing the possibility to re-introduce it, it's an issue I've been meaning to open myself:

  • mozilla implementation is very good privacy wise
  • remote checks can be excluded which is great
  • since the user base has changed and expanded it's not a bad idea to increase the default set of security layers

and yes, censorship concerns are just concerns and not hard evidence, that's also true.
