vmdb2 doesn't allow setting up LVM, grub fails

When using vmdb2 from a USB drive to install Debian onto a laptop's hard drive, setting up LVM on the target disk fails, at the grub step. grub-install runs grub-mkconfig, which runs vgs, which never seems to finish.
