simple-cdd installer ISO fails with Kernel panic on latest Kali

We use live-build-config in our build process to build custom Kali ISOs. This worked one month ago but when trying to build a new ISO with kali-rolling this now fails.

To verify it is not an issue with our setup I tried:

  • A blank clone of live-build-config with ./build.sh --installer --verbose
  • The ISO is built but fails to boot into the installer. No (relevant) errors in the output.
  • When booting the ISO it just shows the bootloader and then fails with a "Kernel panic - not syncing: No working init found.".

I can confirm the ISO contains a initrd.gz and it is referenced correctly in the boot menu. No idea how to further debug this issue. Maybe there is something wrong with the new kernel.
