Create public facing usage estimator for PIs needing to figure what to ask for
Problem / Opportunity Statement
To make it easier for instructors and PIs to estimate their needs, if human resources and time permit, I'd propose a page to help PIs estimate their SU needs. We do this presently in text. That looks like this:
16 week course 20 students m1.medium instance size (8 vCPU) Planning for 24 hour/day usage -
8 vCPU (SUs) x 24 hours/day x 7 days x 16 weeks = 21,504 SUs/student x 20 students = 430,080 SUs
It would be standard practice to round that to 450,000 SUs for development time for the instructors plus instructor VMs during the duration of the course.
Resolution
A solution would look like a web page with some simple calculator functions. We would want to have dropdowns to select flavor, number of users, weeks, hours/day, etc.
A more advanced option would be to have simple calculators and advanced, where the simple is an "always on" approach of
flavor (burn rate) x 24 hours/day x 365 days
and the more advanced is the education style noted above with weeks, students, hours/day, etc.
For both, it would also be a nice feature to be able to add multiple VM sizes/types and sum them for the PI (e.g. they first figure an m1.quad, then add a line and figure an r3.large, then add a line and figure a g3.small and the tool will sum those for them).
This is a "nice to have" not a must have and could also be done in stages (simple vs complex).
