Issues raised by VirtualCuriosities's article

https://www.virtualcuriosities.com/articles/3460/comparison-affinity-designer-vs-inkscape

  • New Document dialog
    • Dialog should open on top of the main window (issue TBD) (Used by: Krita, Blender, Designer)
    • Clicking on a template should open the template's settings instead of opening it directly (issue TBD)
    • Recent Files should have thumbnails (issue: #279 (moved))
  • Main Window interface
    • Spinbuttons: Addressed in 1.5 with the new InkSpinButton (Can someone link it here?)
    • Fill and Stroke panel janky, requires more clicks and more headspace to adjust: partly addressed by Mike's new Object Properties dialog, needs mockup for main dialog
    • Dockable dialog panes "disappear" when the separator is dragged to the edge (could be "fixed" with horizontal scrolling in dialogs possible)
  • Pixel Perfection
    • Force pixel alignment: could be beefed-up rounding with choice between rounding only, or preserve shape
    • Move by Whole Pixels: Could be a toggle (beside a "pixellated" view mode maybe)
  • Clipping
    • Enable drag-and-drop to clip objects (what it implies, is to better hide the clipping from the user, and make everything clip groups)
    • Enable adding a stroke to clipped areas (again this might require pseudo-objects hidden from the user in the Layers dialog)
  • Text
    • "Heading" styles (or configurable classes) applicable to the text
    • Font family keyboard focus: needs clarification
    • Line height varies when inline styles are different: may be a bug, needs testing how it works on other programs
  • Text on Path: issue #256 (closed)
    • text put on path should be shown as text with the path (the path should be hidden but editable when in the text (node?) tool)
    • needs testing to see how it works on Affinity
  • Filters
    • Expose common filters as "layer effects" like Illustrator, Affinity, Krita, etc.
      • needs discussion
    • Make editable filters editable with the same parameters
  • Multiple strokes (needs research on how other programs does it)
    • "By contrast, on Affinity Designer, you can add as many strokes as you want and reorder them in the "Appearance" panel. You can even add multiple fills. You can also add multiple outlines by using the Quick FX panel and clicking on the cog icon and then clicking on the plus (+) next to the Outline filter to add another one of it. For some reason it seems it's not possible to add multiple strokes to text, but it's possible to add multiple outlines. A user complain about it many years ago."
  • Markers
    • "On Affinity, I do have the ability to add arrows to the end of lines, which is nice. I have much better UI for selecting the size and shape of the arrow than I have in Inkscape." (needs investigation)
    • "I have a special UI for controlling how dashed or dotted lines should look like. On Inkscape, this is just a huge dropdown! I never have any idea of what my line is going to look like until I select one option." (same)
    • "Affinity also provides tools like the "corner tool" and "stroke width" tool that in Inkscape would only be available as Live Path Effects." (?)
  • Canvas clipping (available in the Document Properties)
