This is quite a fundamental bug: text selection is the property of the text context (tool) and does not exist outside of that tool. For gradient handles I have made a clumsy workaround, so you can color them with the dropper, and it even remembers the selected handle. But it's only a workaround, and it won't work for text because text selection is much more complex. I think the correct solution will be to change dropper to not be an event context of its own, and NOT terminate the current event context when you switch to the dropper tool. Just make it an event context sub-mode (keeping its own cursor and toolbar button, so it looks the same to the user).
