elements outside viewbox of embedded svg are not exported to pdf

Summary:

While editing SVG in Inkscape certain elements are visible, but neither when exporting to PDF nor viewing in Windows Explorer's SVG viewer they show up.

Steps to reproduce:

  • open Inkscape
  • open the file apps.svg (see below)
  • check that you can see the hand holding the mobile phone within every hexagon
  • export page to pdf targeting pdf v1.5
  • open pdf and check that the hand holding the mobile phone is NOT visible. see pdf below for comparison
  • use svg viewer of choice and see that both text "APPS" and icon are missing

What happened?

Inkscape renders a rather simple embedded svg without problem, but makes no warning that this element will not be visible in other svg viewers or upon exporting to PDF.

What should have happened?

Either the elements should have been included or a warning should have been visible that this element either doesn't conform to SVG standards or will be ignored by both other svg viewers or the pdf exporter. Even better would be an explanation as to why these elements will be omitted and what to do about it.
