image showing differences between raster and vector images, needed for the website
Hi Friends,
This would be an image (to go on a new webpage) which is understandable by new Inkscape users, which typically can be described as "understandable by teenagers". Ideally, someone would volunteer to write a more technical page for the wiki, which would be linked to this page, for those who want more details. But that's not directly part of this request.
I'm in the process of writing up the few main points or concepts which need to be depicted. I'll post those as soon as I have it finished, and others can comment, offer suggestions etc. I'm thinking of making a loose format in an SVG doc, which would just be a starting place, and the artist would have some liberty to rearrange as needed, to make their artwork, work.
My thought would be to put out a call on the mailing list and forums (possibly Facebook??) for artists who might be interested. Personally I would hope for something light and colorful, probably cartoonish. If anyone else has thoughts about what it should include, please feel free to join the discussion.
The artists would be informed that this is not really a contest, and that they should be prepared for others to take their SVG file and make edits, if they're needed. Either the website team, or people involved with the website in general, will make the final decision, and possibly might make edits as well, if they are needed. Although of course the artist or artists involved would be credited.
I guess we need to define a particular size for this. And given there are plans to start discussion for a variable width, or responsive website design, at hackfest, I guess that should be taken into consideration as well, for deciding how large to make the image. Can anyone venture a guess about the proper size, at this time? Should it be set up in sort of blocks, or pages, like the Chat behavior one (https://media.inkscape.org/media/cms_page_media/56/ask-smart-questions.pdf)?
As an added enticement, I'm thinking of mentioning that discussion about some kind of Inkscape "mascot" has been ongoing, off and on, over years. And that if the artist happens to come up with such a mascot ("Inky"?) that is liked well enough, it might be encorporated into the branding, which the Vectors team will be working on over the next number of months. Does that seem like a reasonable "perk"? Or is that over-reaching?
I'll have some proposed guidelines ready shortly :-)
Edit Should there be a deadline?
