Screenshots and graphics need to be updated
This task consists of multiple parts:
- graphics that can be used without change in the English book need to be renamed to English, then reuploaded and updated in the chapters
- graphics that contain French text that can be cut off need to be stripped of the text, reuploaded under a new name, and updated in the chapters. The translated text needs to be put under the images. Compound images that have more than one description text need to be split into their parts.
- graphics that contain French menu items, or text that cannot be stripped, need to be recreated. For screenshots, it would be recommended to use these defaults: Inkscape 0.92.2, default icon set, no window decorations on the images, with View > Wide, and if possible under a standard Windows theme, so as to have screenshots that fit the largest audience.
- if you want to take screenshots on a non-Windows system, look into virtualization techniques (e.g. VirtualBox, VMWare,...). Make sure you have a valid licence for any of your VMs.
- use png images. Do not turn good screenshots into artifact-ridden jpg images
- Screenshots: Can you try to make them keep their aspect ratio in the html version of the manual, please? They look distorted on my monitor. Please compare how it was done for other large images in other chapters.
- Cut your screenshots as exactly as you can so they look clean.
- Screenshot naming convention: if possible, try to build the image names from global to specific - left to right, e.g. install_inkscape_mac_step1 instead of s1instmac (or whatever it was). That way, it will be easier to find images that belong together in the list of pictures. Use underscores to separate the parts to improve readability.
- Check 'constrain proportions' in the Appearance tab of the dialog that opens when you select 'Insert/Edit image' in the context menu of any image. You don't need to fill in the dimensions for full width pictures, then the image can resize as needed, adapting to screen width. Check list:
