Moving a shape while drawing

Original title: Moving a shape while drawing it with Alt
Summary:
Richardo wrote...
When selecting an elliptical region in GIMP, it works very similarly to the ellipse tool in Inkscape, but in GIMP, when holding down the ALT-key when selecting an ellipse, it translates the ellipse according to mouse movement.
In Inkscape, however, once you start drawing an ellipse, you cannot change the origin you set for it. If the origin of the ellipse is not quite correct when you start drawing the shape, you will have to modify it after drawing it. It ends up in a frustrating resize-translate-resize until you're satisfied.
The selection tools in the GIMP are very similar to Inkscape's shape tools, except that the functions of CTRL and SHIFT keys are the opposite. In Inkscape, there is no function for the ALT key, and it could be used the way it is used in the GIMP. This could be applied to other shape tools too.
Migrator's Notes:
- It's possible that GIMP had this feature as I'm understanding it (we're talking v2.6 IIRC) but holding
Alt
does nothing while defining that selection. Presently in GIMPAlt-drag
while in Ellipse Selection mode does change the position of the selection but only after it's been defined. -
Meanwhile in Adobelandia, Illustrator has had this ability for many years now: draw a shape/path node and, without releasing the cursor, pressing
Spacebar
allows moving the shape/node to wherever the user prefers. ReleasingSpacebar
allows continued modification. Now, this is a nice feature tostealappropriate.
