Easy Symbols Import/Export
Migrated from https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1727658

Summary (edited):

There are many shapes (symbol collections -- gt) out on the web but it is difficult and time consuming to import them. It would be nice with a tool that can import a whole sheet of shapes (symbols) directly. This will make it easy to exchange shapes (symbols) between users and to update other PCs.

like symbol libraries ? See for instance https://github.com/Xaviju/inkscape-open-symbols (and the "how to install" section)

My issue is that this could be made more user friendly so users with low PC skills can figure it out.
1: I generate a symbols and collect them in a library and it is save as a svg file.
2: Export the symbol library. It can be that it is as simple as copying the file to a selectable export folder.
3: On the other PC, Open import, Browse to the folder where the symbol library file is located and import it. This may also be as simple as copying the file into the correct folder as I don’t know how this works in inkscape.

That is where it could be nice to have an export / import function which will check for these things and copy the file in / out to a user defined folder. The user then don't need to know where to place files inside inkscape.
I/we have something which works but the feature request was to make it easier to use for users which have low PCs engine skills.
Migrator's Notes:
-
@jabiertxof offered some very good information on the subject but, as the original submitter implied, it's all too complicated for mere mortals
😆 - In the interest of user-friendliness, I have migrated this feature request for consideration. Some kind of import/export/file-checking wrapped up in a nice GUI element, possibly the

dialog itself...?- For the older
🤓 here: remember in the old pre-OSX MacOS, dropping a font (or desk accessory) onto the System Folder would automatically check and install? Maybe something similar in spirit?
