Super Dropper tool: pick attributes (colors, styles and fonts)
Migrated from https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/170256 from 2004-05-25
and incorporated into this issue.
Summary:
Original title and summary:
Dropper tool for font attributes.
When the dropper tool is used on text, it picks up the font, size, kerning, color, etc.
Additionally...

vonHalenbach: please give this feature request more consideration. I'll try and better describe its desired operation below.
- When the dropper tool hovers over a text area, a text emblem is added to the cursor, and a tooltip appears with the current font attributes (font, size, color, etc.)
- Keyboard modifiers to control which attributes are pick up when clicking (for example, a click with no modifiers only picks up color, shift-click picks up all font attributes)
This is really a time saver to quickly apply uniform text attributes.
Migrator's Notes
This concept can be taken further, as has already been done in the commercial vector illustration programs (cough*Illustrator*cough)
- when hovering over text, the Dropper samples text attributes
- when hovering over an object or path, the Dropper samples both Fill and Stroke color and Stroke width and style
This idea could retain Inkscape's normal Dropper tools behaviour with additional modifier keys (as suggested by the original submitter)
- Dropper click: as-is behaviour (sample object's Fill color)
- Dropper Shift-click: as-is behaviour (sample object's Stroke color)
- Dropper Alt-click/Alt-Shift-click: business as usual (sample object's Fill/Stroke color inversely)
- Dropper Ctrl/Cmd-Shift Click: samples object's attributes, meaning samples everything including font attributes if applicable
One last thing: I'd ask Santa Claus to make the Dropper sample anything on the screen, including Inkscape's "chrome" and even outside of Inkscape's window. That way I wouldn't have to import an image into Inkscape just to sample its colors, saving at least three passes (import image, import dialog settings and OK, possible repositioning, elimination).
Obviously if anyone has ideas on how to finesse the details, please chime in. Thank you.
