Split Commands Bar into several smaller toolbars
Migrated from https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/170349 from 2004-07-23
Summary:
bug-importer wrote...
It should be split into several new bars, with grouping similar to that in the menus.
File Bar:
- New, - Open, - Save, - Print, - Import, - Export, - Close Window
Edit Bar:
- Undo, - Redo, - Copy, - Cut, - Paste
Objects Bar:
- Duplicate, - Group, - Ungroup
Logically, couldn't these also go on the Tool Controls bar for the object selector?
View Bar:
- Zoom to selection, - Zoom to drawing, - Zoom to page
Dialogs Bar:
- Fill and Stroke, - Text and Font, - XML Editor, - Align and Distribute, - Global Preferences, - Document Preferences

@bryceharrington, knowingly or not, gave this Wishlist request a raison d'être...
However, I wonder if the underlying issue could be solved other than splitting toolbar icons to different toolbars. If the motivation is to enable fitting more toolbar buttons in a narrower window, or hiding less necessary toolbar icons, perhaps this could be done in a manner other than breaking things out into separate toolbars?
Migrator's Notes:
- I was hesistant to migrate this issue as there are many similar issues filed regarding toolbar customization/placement. If the powers that be feel this should be closed and/or merged with an existing issue, please let me know.
🙇 - If I've understood the situation correctly, GTK doesn't allow floating toolbars, toolbar docking nor repositioning so this entire argument may be almost rendered moot.

My take on the situation: tl;dr 👎
The Commands Bar concept in general (not only Inkscape's...everybody's) is a redundant waste of time, space and resources; one of the worst examples of GUI baloney that (IIRC) Microsoft unleashed on the world and, unfortunately, adopted by everybody and their dog. I personally always hide it.
The Commands Bar saves no time nor energy and just eats pixels: if you need to save (for example) your file, you place the cursor over...uhmmm...which icon? Floppy disc?! What's that piece of antiquated tech doing there (if anybody still recognizes it as such)? Let's see what the tooltip says. In the meantime, mere pixels away, is the 🤬 File menu. In any case, Ctrl-S anybody? I know not everybody is keyboard-oriented, some always preferring the mouse, but the Commands Bar is a weak GUI version of training wheels.
Please don't confuse the argument: I'm not arguing against toolbars in general but specifically, as known in Inkscape as, the Commands Bar.
For your consideration: how much would your workflow change if the Commands Bar didn't exist?
