Flash message when kerning tried in flowtext
Migrated from https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/166773
From 2005-07-28
Summary:
Since text spacing modification is not supported in SVG flowtext (Inkscape's flowed text box), some kind of alert dialog should appear warning the user if text spacing modification is attempted.
Steps to reproduce:
- create a text box in Inkscape and enter some text
- change any of the spacing settings in the Text toolbar
What happened?
Nothing. Letterspacing/word spacing/rotation in SVG flowtext is not supported.
What should have happened?
Inkscape does not define SVG standards so until the SVG spec adopts a method to affect flowbox letterspacing, etc., Inkscape should present a warning, possibly with a "Do not show again" checkbox.

We could just make it work, of course. Since flowroot is never going to be a part of any Recommendation, it doesn't really matter what we do with it.

This is still a problem. At least give a warning when the user tries to use Alt-arrow on flowed text. Just waisted [sic] an hour to figure out why manual kerning seemed to have stopped working.

I think that just adding a short warning in the status bar would suffice.
"Type or edit flowed text (x characters); press Enter to start a new paragraph. Manual Kerning is not allowed."
Of course it would be better to support kerning on flowed text, but at least adding that to the status bar would notify the limitation without the need of a modal box, coding a flashing or something like that)

- Not all Inkscape users are SVG experts or know the intricacies of the SVG spec (myself and the original reporter), much less know what's the rendering engine under the hood, and really, that should be invisible to the user until direct SVG/CSS/XML editing is requested.
