Lock selected items with keyboard shortcut
Migrated from https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1797047
Bug Description
When I used to use Illustrator, I would frequently drill down through a document by selecting the top object, locking it, and proceeding down until I got to the level I wanted, then unlocking all to continue editing. Unless I missed something, this is not possible in Inkscape. A specific instance is when you have a word behind itself with the stroke heavy for a halo effect. selecting the bottom one is not easy currently. the only work around I found was to use the interface provided by the menu Object > Objects... which should be merged with the layers palette and anything that pops up one of those interface panes should all be in one menu for discoverability, but all that is a matter for another wishlist item. Overall though, bang up job guys, thank you for all of your hard work in the form of inkscape.
Inkscape 0.92.3 (d244b95, 2018-08-02) (snap version) Ubuntu Mate 18.04.1
A similar issue is described in issue #524 but since that is a list of feature requests/suggestions, I thought to single out this idea. Eventually, as suggested by @adam.belis, those issues should eventually be separated into single issues.
In any case, Mr Segers and Mr Kozicki are both indirectly pointing out an inconsistency in the Inkscape UI ("bug" might be too strong) with no rhyme or reason.

One can lock/unlock layers with
Layers > Lock/Unlock Current Layer
and while there is no default keyboard shortcut, one could easily be user-defined. -
One can unlock all objects under
Object > Unlock All
with a shortcut easily user-defined also.
But where is the menu item for Object > Lock All
? Or why is Layers > Lock/Unlock Current Layer
a toggle meanwhile Objects > Unlock All
is not (Lock/Unlock All
)? Additionally, where is Objects > Lock/Unlock Current Object
?
Since and presently, while the aforementioned arbitrary options exist, the only method for locking/unlocking selected objects is via the Objects panel, with no option for a keyboard shortcut.
