redesign GUI based on GTK3 capabilities
Hello community!
First I need to say it's amazing what you all did with Inkscape 1. Just wow!
With gtk3 this is going to be next level. Thank you so much to the whole team!
But the biggest thing for me, as UI/UX designer, UI is not much user-friendly by mine opinion. I am going to make some proposals for UI changes for what I think is important.
**Better organised Side docked panels**
Inkscape UI could be much better organized if we use tabs for main panels. Gimp would be a good example of using tabs for panels.
Inkscape have tabs also but it's to complicate to understand what is going on there. I don't understand how to show, hide or what to expect, where tab is going to be shown, it's really mess there.
I hope you will understand better on mockups.
**Cleaner UI**
I know that GTK3 will fix many things but in case that something must be designed, I will mention some of things.
Keyboard shortcuts right of dialog titles are so unnecessary.
They are good if you are new into Inkscape or you just want to see them all the time but I think nobody need that. They can appear on hover on title but not visible all the time.
There are many elements without enough or too much space around, lines or shadows..
Main canvas should go without shadow by default. I know we can set that from general settings, but I think it should go off by default and color around canvas should be different than white, it could be gray, or something.
**Moderm Header Bar with toolbar**
Now with possibility to have window control buttons in the same line with other buttons and software name we should use that to remove empty space and improve space utilization.
I believe this is planned with going on gtk3 but in case it is not, this is important, because it can work and look better with this new concept.
I would say the best organized toolbar in graphic editors are in Affinty software. They are so clean understandable, and well grouped so I think it is the best example we should have on mind. I would completely remove two vertical toolbars on the right side. All buttons should be reorganized into top main one.
They also have something called personas which is very good concept I think others should include in their software which have many different types of users that are using it. For example personas for UI designing, or prototyping, or anything that will consider big amount of tools and settings that refer to one thing.
This top bar should contain only tools and things that user uses the most of the time, or they should be “neer the hand” all the time. I think we finding those things mostly under view menu.
So things like Display mode, Color display mode, Split view mode, X-ray mode, Color managed view, Show Grid, Show guides, snaping and close button.
Menu button should contain all stuff from old menu bar.
**Multiple Inkscape documents**
It would be awesome if Inkscape could open multiple documents. They could be organised as tabs under the document canvas, like in Gimp.
**Layers and Objects united**
I think it's little crazy to have separated panels for objects and layers. Layers are basically groups of layers so why to separate them? It leads to confusion. Also we already have layers in object panel, so we don't need layers panel. I think we just need to rename Object panel into Layers and Objects, or just Layers, because word "layers" is more common in editors of all kind.
**Path effects**
Path effects are going so crazy good with all new possibilities it is too big and heavy on screen, it is covering a big part of canvas. Also list of inserted effect is locked by height and only two and half effects are not enough to be visible so this should be resizable by height. Also if there is no room for displaying all settings of selected effect than we need one more scroll.
Solution:
For adding new effects, we can redesign this popup panel to be smaller and compact and make it very close to side panels, something like Figma did with their effects.
Inserted effects could be placed in accordion list so user can click and open its settings under its name. When he click on other effect previous one will close. So there is only one scrollbar.
**Palette bar**
This bar should be placed under the canvas just like now, but only under the canvas, not other panels. It also should have resizable height.
**Canvas**
This is simple white canvas without borders or shadow by default. Around it should be different color just to distinct canvas. Clean as possible.
**Bottom bar / Info bar**
This bar is very similar to present bar but with all options for controlling canvas, that is logical for me. Zoom and rotate controls and Canvas orientation - Flip canvas vertically and horizontally also should be there.
**Remove Zoom tool**
Zoom options should not be hidden under zoom tool on the left side, because it is going to be used when using other tools. Maybe the best place for all zoom tools would be on the very bottom next to rotate controls.
Options Duplicate selected objects, Create a clone of selected objects, Cut a clone of selected objects, group selected objects and Ungroup selected objects maybe should go under the Select and transform tool options panel.
I will update this mockup from time to time.
