Shapes disappear when union operation is applied

Summary:

Select the two objects in the attached SVG file and then apply the union operation; result: the shapes disappear.

Steps to reproduce:

• Open the attached SVG file.
• (if you imported the file instead of opening it directly, then ungroup the object).
• Select the two objects, Path > Union

What happened?

The objects disappear.

What should have happened?

Inkscape should produce the result of the union operation.
