Dragging symbol into document fails with node tool and item selected

Steps to reproduce:

open Inkscape
draw a path
switch to the node tool, keeping it selected
open symbols dialog, go to any tab
drag a symbol into the document

What happened?

nothing

What should have happened?

symbol appears in document (and is selected)
