inkscape crashes if you try to open a file, won't save recent files

How do you think Inkscape could be improved?

Steps to reproduce:

• open Inkscape
• click the "open" button, press ctrl+o, or use file>open.

What happened?

Inkscape crashes (segfault) the moment the open dialogue appears.

What should have happened?

It shouldn't crash.

Inkscape Version and Operating System:

• Inkscape Version: ... Inkscape 1.0alpha (unknown) (PPA version)
• Operating System: ... Ubuntu
• Operating System version: ... 18.10
