.odg import

Migrated (and expanded) from https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/170100
From 2003-12-21 to 2009-05-17

Summary:

Original title: OpenOffice.org Draw or Open Document graphics (odg) import

  • Inkscape fails importing OpenDocument .odg files with apropos warning
  • Inkscape exports an inaccurate .odg file1

Additionally...

  • Inkscape demonstrably crashes on either embedding or linking an .odg file1 (macOS and Ubuntu), see #3951 (closed)

Additional Information/Comments:

While researching this issue for migration, I remembered an issue posted on ask.libreoffice.org in 2017 regarding importing Inkscape files into LibreOffice in which I had conducted a series of import/export tests. If they can be of any use, I have included a .zip file of the test suite1, created (IIRC) with Inkscape 0.92.X. The abovementioned Inkscape-created .odg file is included in the .zip (test.2017_04_26.odg)

A drawing can be copied from LibreOffice to Inkscape but as a PNG image, and pasted as such.

  • Side-note: on macOS the LO drawing is copied to the clipboard as a TIFF, but pasted into Inkscape as a PNG. What devilry! 😈
