Inkscape v1.0 Performance on Ubuntu 20.04 horribly slow

Summary:

Compared to v 0.92, version 1.0 is very very slow when installed from PPA onto Ubuntu 20.04. See below for comparison:

• Open Inkscape in v0.92 <1s
• Open Inkscape in v1.0 6.4s
• Open large .svg in 0.92: 3.3s
• Open large .svg in 1.0: 142s

This is on the exact same machine - some of my larger files which open in a few seconds in v0.92 take over two full minutes to open! Overall performance of pretty much any action has this same dramatic slowdown (even simple actions like changing object color). This is a fast machine (Intel i7, 16GB ram)

See above. I have used both v0.92 and v1.0 on two separate Ubuntu 20.04 machines with the exact same results

What happened?

Compared to v0.92, v1.0 is showing a severe performance issue across the board

What should have happened?

I would expect v1.0 to have similar performance to v0.92
