Inkscape crashes when using the dropper

Summary:

Inkscape crashes when you use the dropper often and for longer periods of time.

Steps to reproduce:

  • open Inkscape
  • create a tall but thin recktangle and fill it with a color
  • select the dropper and move the cursor from the left of the recktangle over it to the right of it an backwards.
  • repeat this untill the cursor changes from the dropper icon to the arrow (I had to shake my mouse ca. 80 times)
  • now the UI is frozen and Inkscape crashes directly or after a click

What happened?

The UI is frozen and Inkscape crashed.

It crashed when moving the mouse fast over the recktangle but also when moving slow.

I have tested this on three Windows 10 machines. Two tower PCs and one Laptop. It crashed on all three with Inkscape 1.0. I tried to recreate it with an older Inkscape version, but this time it did not crash.

GUESS My guess is that it has to do with the little color preview on the cursor, because it seems to be an UI error and not was present in pre 1.0 Inkscapes where color preview was not attached to the cursor. Maybe the UI-Renderer has some problems with this preview. Please keep in mind, that this is just a guess. I have never looked in the source code of Inkscape.
