Maintaining aspect ratio by default for images and other objects as well

Steps to reproduce:

Resize any image using the drag handles on a bounding box

What happened?

Image gets deformed.

What should have happened?

Image should maintain aspect ratio.

Inkscape Version and Operating System:

  • Inkscape Version: 1.0alpha (1:0.92.0+devel+201904102207+5b29da3)
  • Operating System: Pop!_OS
  • Operating System version: 18.10

Explanation

More often than not, the aspect ratio of an image should be maintained while resizing using drag handles. The same can be said for text, stars, polygons and spirals. Not maintaining the aspect ratio of an object makes sense for rectangles, ellipses and lines, but that's about it.

I know this is a subjective issue. But as a designer, it is something that lies close to my heart. Stretched images, text and in many cases, shapes, are not something that should be endorsed. In the past few months I've come to love Inkscape, and since you are working towards version 1.0, this is something I would love to see. If not by default, maybe as an option in the preferences. Other programs like Affinity Designer do it that way, too. It makes so much more sense.
