Allowing customization of toolbar with possibility to hide/show/order items
Summary:
Toolbox should be customizable
Steps to reproduce:
- use a relatively small screen (mine is a 14", using a 1929×1080 resolution in 16:9)
- open Inkscape
- look at the toolbox menu on the right
- look in the preferences>interface>menu and/or try secondary click on the menu, looking for a way to customize what is displayed or the order in which it is displayed.
What happened?
- the toolbox on the right doesn't directly display all icons
- no obvious way to parameter this was found
What should have happened?
Inkscape should let its users customize the toolbox. According to How to customize toolbars in Inkscape - Beginners' Questions - Inkscape Forum, it should be available in 1.0, but if the option is available, it's not easy to find.
Also, I would suggest to propose to add a "profile" manager for these settings. As stated Kresimir in the forum, tools that are not hidden by default are most likely useless to any user already accustomed to standard keyboard shortcut: new, open, save, print, copy, cut, paste. That's 7 elements most users will already know the shortcut for. It's more elements than what was hidden in my case. So would I be able to customize this menu, I would remove them, and I'll be done. I guess many user would end up to customize the interface in the same way. It does make sense to display the seven mentioned icons in the default setup, though. That's why I think shipping a "base/advanced user" profile with Inkscape might make sense here. But a profile manager might be more work to implement thus said. More advanced user should probably able to transport their complete configuration using ~/.config/inkscape
or other.
