Inkscape fills up all available RAM and swap when exporting PDF from big SVG file

Steps to reproduce:

What happened?

At first Inkscape pretty fast used my full 16GB of memory until finally the Linux kernel sent a "SIGKILL" to stop this.

So I thought: Maybe it needs a bit more. So I added 16GB of swap space and tried again. Inkscape now at first used all my RAM, then all of the swap space and then got killed again.

Maybe even more memory needed? So I increased my swap space to 32GB but the result kept the same.

There is a good chance that this is some kind of endless memory consumption.

What should have happened?

At some point I expected the PDF to be saved without all memory being used.

To finally get my PDF, I opened the SVG in Libre Office. It is close to impossible to edit it there but the PDF was created in seconds.

Inkscape Version and Operating System:

  • Operating System: Arch Linux
  • Operating System version: Bleeding edge 😛
