Inkscape versioning and release cycle going forward
quick note:
earlier i posted the suggestions on recket-/inkchat, but i have spent more than some hours now searching for 3 suggestions i made. and one of them regarding release notes is still left - owing to my mistake of not saving it at proper place, intensified by extremely poor searching (no search by user - biiiiigest bummer, and no option to search in all participated chat) and starred msg interface (all starred scattered - not an option of having looking at them together) of rocket chat. so i am posting directly here from now. Hope it doesnt give sense of suggestions put in haste.
Okay. Now on with it:
I have seen the doubts regrading versions pop up very often (informally though) in the chat, and I think it would be nice to have the discussion at one place. I am not saying that one versioning is better or the other, the devs and the seniors would have a better view at it. I am just gathering the few bits i saw lying around at one place.
- currently it's doubted between 1.0.1 and 1.1
- people seem to be more in favour of naming as 1.1
- i suggest we use suffixes for bug fix release
something like a, b, c etc(inspired from blender). This would save us from hurrying up a BRAND new big release just for fixes.
which would give us1.0a1.0.1 if many signifant bugs are found in 1.0. - I also suggest the team look at Semantic Versioning ,
- ... and also at how GIMP does it - 4th para.
