latest 1.x unusably slow/unresponsive on macOS 10.15.3

Steps to reproduce:

• open Inkscape

What happened?

• slow to render, respond to mouse clicks, render UI

What should have happened?

• none of these things

Inkscape Version and Operating System:

• Inkscape Version: 1.1-dev (bc69992, 2020-04-15)
• Operating System: macOS
• Operating System version: 10.15.3

this has been a problem growing for years... it's to the point now where I'm starting to use other software because I don't have 10-30 seconds for every time I want to move a shape with my mouse.
