japanese text input not working in text box

Steps to reproduce:

  1. open inkscape
  2. select "text tool"
  3. press the keyboard key to toggle japanese text input to "on"

What happened?

it just types in English lettering "konnichiha"

What should have happened?

it should have typed in Japanese: "今日は” A workaround is to type into a text editor then copy-and-paste, this works (and I can resize etc no problem).

While I'm here, I'll also mention that even in 0.92.5 I can't change japanese text to "bold" (in any font, including fonts that can do japanese text "bold" in Libreoffice writer", Italic will work however. The only workaround I have found is to Path>object to path, then change stroke style. But of course if I want to change the text I have to start again with a new text box... I use inkscape for making graphics in Japanese so this problem is affecting my workflow somewhat...

Inkscape Version and Operating System:

  • Inkscape Version: 1.0rc1 (09960d6, 2020-04-09) (I'm using the appimage: Inkscape-09960d6-x86_64.AppImage)
  • Operating System: Kernel: 4.15.0-74-generic x86_64 bits: 64 gcc: 7.4.0 Desktop: Cinnamon 3.8.9 (Gtk 3.22.30-1ubuntu4) dm: lightdm Distro: Linux Mint 19 Tara

Thanks for anything anyone can do! I've been using inkscape quite a bit recently and am loving it!
