Export PNG Image: confusing Save button in Browse dialog

Migrated from https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/168976 🍷

Steps to reproduce:

  • File > Export Bitmap
  • Press "Browse" next to the file name, it will open another window titled "Select a filename for exporting". You will be able to choose a directory and enter a name.
  • Press the "Save" button.

What happened?

You return to the "Export Bitmap" window.

A user might assume the bitmap file has been saved at this point. The path and filename are now in the "Filename" input box, but the file was actually not saved yet. To save it you need to press the "Export" button.

What should have happened?

The "Save" button in the "Select a filename for exporting" window could be set to "Select" to avoid this confusion. Or the exported image simply should be saved.

Inkscape Version and Operating System:

Original reporter doesn't specify (2007-10-19). It has to be from a while ago as the language has since changed ("Export bitmap" to "Export PNG Image")...but the dialog remains the same.

Tested on

  • 1.1-dev (bc69992, 2020-04-15), macOS 10.13.6 (17G12034)
  • 0.92.4 (5da689c313, 2019-01-14), MacPorts
  • 1.1-dev (ae55a4e461, 2020-04-06), snap package, Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS

Additional Information/Comments:

  • Yes, yet another "Export PNG" dialog issue. There are 100 issues regarding (43 open) as of this writing (2020-04-19), each with their own particulars. Hence the migration as it's not duplicated exactly anywhere else AFAICT.
  • I've personally been bitten by this issue many times until "muscle memory" finally kicked in.
