Merge Layers

The Idea:

Please add a feature to merge (flatten) layers similar to as found in The GIMP.

Additional Information/Comments:

• I was sure I would find a duplicate but after searching for an hour, I could only show issue #1089 (closed) which may be related (it's unclear).
• was assigned to bbyak in 2007 but no movement since 2010.
