Insert Node button missing

I frequently need to insert a node to a path, in the middle of two other nodes. Inkscape had a button in the Node tool to do exactly this. See: http://bucarotechelp.com/design/graphics/92041301.asp Now this button is gone, apparently without replacement.

There is a new button menu to insert nodes at min/max x/y, but this doesn’t help in any way.

I know that I can insert nodes by double-clicking at the path, but that inserts nodes just somewhere, not in the middle.

What happened?

Insert node button is missing.

What should have happened?

Insert node button is available in the Node tool toolbar, next to Delete selected nodes.
