inkscape crashes on startup (debian buster)

• installed inkscape for first time on current os-install of device (thinkpad t410)
• attempt to open Inkscape with inkscape command from terminal

Inkscape immediatly reports encountering an internal error (no window opens except this error message) and returns the following:

terminate called after throwing an instance of 'Gio::Error'

Emergency save activated! Emergency save completed. Inkscape will close now. If you can reproduce this crash, please file a bug at www.inkscape.org with a detailed description of the steps leading to the crash, so we can fix it. Aborted
