unable to associate SVG with Inkscape on Windows 7
Migrated from: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1417146
Steps to reproduce:
- in file manager (Windows Explorer) right-click on any SVG file
- choose Open with
- in Open With dialog, click Browse button
- locate inkscape.exe, click Open
- Inkscape does not appear in the Open With dialog, as it normally should
What happened?
Since Inkscape is not an option, it can't be associated to SVG.
What should have happened?
Inkscape should appear in the menu.
Inkscape Version and Operating System:
- Inkscape Version: any Inkscape version
- Operating System: Windows 7 (and probably other versions too)
This workaround (which personally has worked for me with 3 or 4 different upgrades) is provided by Patrick Storz:
"This is actually a Windows bug (Inkscape could possibly implement a workaround, though).
To manually work around it:
- Open "regedit.exe"
- Browse to "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\inkscape.exe"
- Delete this key ("inkscape.exe")
Afterwards you should be able to associate SVG files with Inkscape normally."
And he further explains:
"The reason for the bug is that Windows seems to have problems to differentiate between
- "C:\Program Files\Inkscape\inkscape.exe" and
- "C:\Program Files (x86)\Inkscape\inkscape.exe"
Therefore if you had the 32-bit version installed and update to the 64-bit version, the reported behavior occurs."
There is some additional discussion about registry keys, but I don't understand enough to summarize, and can't quote every Comment. I just want to make sure the problem is documented and can potentially be improved.
Thank you very much!
