Copied freehand objects become oversimplified and lose original shape when using Pencil Tool

Summary:

When I use the Pencil Tool to draw freehand lines and then try to copy them, the copies become oversimplified and do not match the original shapes.

Steps to reproduce:

  • open Inkscape.
  • draw some freehand shape using the Free Hand tool.
  • select the shape.
  • select Duplicate in the context menu, or copy and paste the shape.

What happened?

The shape of the copy doesn't match the original. If I select the Node Tool next, it shows the correct shape of the copy on hover (in yellow on the screenshot).

What should have happened?

The shape of the copy fully matches the original.

Version info

Inkscape 1.4.2 (ebf0e940, 2025-05-08) on Mac OS 15.5, M1

Additional notes

Using Path|Simplify doesn't change the behavior. If I move original objects they preserve their shape correctly. If I use the Clone command, cloned objects preserve the correct shape. The only workaround I've found is to use Path|Object to Path command on original objects, and after that copies will preserve original shape. Simplification of original objects can happen after opening a saved file and selecting such objects - simplification will happen on select. Also, I had few occasions when simplification happened with Undo command.
