Fill & stroke of shapes is broken

Steps to reproduce:

• open Inkscape
• No FILL and no STROKE for:
  • Draw a rectangle
  • Draw a circle
  • Draw a polygon
  • Draw a bezier (pen)

FILL & STROKE do work for:

• Freehand line (pencil) - STROKE works
• Closed polygon composed of freehand lines (Pencil) - STROKE & FILL both work
• ...

What happened?

Shapes don't fill or stroke (double checked that opacity is 100%) I tried other, more exotic colour choices, including gradients but still didn't work! ...

What should have happened?

Shapes should render in the assigned fill and stroke colours ...
