**Implementation sketch**:

1. Read the current `static/js/site-search.js` end-to-end. Identify the four touch points that change: `buildIndex`, `runSearch`, `toResultRow` / `makeSnippet`, `renderResults`. Everything else (debounce, toggle handler, `seedFromQueryString`, status helpers, state machine) stays.
