Ubuntu Touch based on Ubuntu 20.04
This Epic tracks the progress of shipping Ubuntu Touch based on Ubuntu 20.04 to some or all supported Ubuntu Touch devices. We have not yet decided which devices will receive the updates to Ubuntu Touch based on Ubuntu 20.04. It is no secret that Ubuntu Touch for all supported devices is based on Ubuntu 16.04. It is also no secret that Ubuntu 16.04 is out of support, so it no longer receives security fixes without an Ubuntu Advantage subscription (even then, only x86_64 is still supported). This is the primary reason that we are moving to a newer, supported version of Ubuntu. However, this also makes it easier to package Ubuntu Touch software in Linux distributions with newer libraries. We decided to perform two other migrations during this one, as not doing so would harm the project in the long term: 1. Moving all Ubuntu Touch and Lomiri software to GitLab. Doing so gives us the better project management and data independence features of GitLab. 2. Removing as many Canonical and Ubuntu trademarks from internal and external APIs as possible. Ironically, some of the external APIs will need to be added *back* with compatibility layers shipped in Ubuntu Touch. However, distributions like Debian and Fedora would not accept our software without these changes, unless a Canonical employee submitted it (even then, acceptance would be after a lot of bureaucratic headaches). This Epic is an overview of all tasks required for 20.04. Neither it, nor its dependencies, will ever have a complete view of the work that went in to this release. **This Epic will always list less work than actually has to be done, which may seem misleading**. However, it will allow us to better track and talk about our efforts in a useful way. If you are filing an issue which is specific to Ubuntu Touch 20.04 and which must be closed before one of the release milestones (listed as child Epics) is reached, please add it as needed or ping @UniversalSuperBox if you do not have the required permissions. This may be closed once the General Availability release of 20.04 is available -- when Ubuntu Touch 20.04 is an update offered to all devices we've decided to support and automatic redirects to it are in place.
