UX Research: Left Side Navigation Vision and Improvements
Currently we organize the sidebar top-level items by grouping related features. As GitLab's product offering grows at a rapid rate, we must consider how the information architecture and findability of the left side navigation may be impacted.
##### Research Objectives
- Understand user experiences navigating throughout GitLab
- Understand the cold and hot spots of the left side navigation
- Understand what should be top-level, flattened, added, removed, etc
##### Overarching Research Questions
- How should the links on the sidebar be organized?
- Should the links on the sidebar reflect the most commonly used related features?
- Should the sidebar serve as a method of promotion/discovery for new features as well?
- For example, Issues are used by many users, but Value Stream Management, especially in its early phases, will not be known or relevant to everyone. Would it be reasonable to have VSM in the sidebar immediately upon release?
- What kind of impact would ordering the left sidenav by GitLab's 9 DevOps stages have on usability? Are there other, better ways of organizing the links that are there?
- Should there be a set number of core features that live on the left side navigation?
