Offer multiple compute machine types on the GitLab SaaS Runners on Linux - x86-64 (MVC)
## Release notes New more powerful machine types, `medium` and `large` are now available on GitLab SaaS Runners on Linux. With these two machine types, you can now access more choices for your GitLab SaaS CI/CD jobs. And with 100% job isolation on an ephemeral virtual machine, security and autoscaling fully managed by GitLab, you can confidently run your critical CI/CD jobs on GitLab SaaS. The new SaaS Runners on Linux are a `2 vCPU, 8 GB RAM` (saas-linux-medium-amd64), and a `4 vCPU, 16 GB RAM` (saas-linux-large-amd64) configuration. These machine types, powered by the latest generation of Google Compute N2D virtual machines, deliver significant performance improvements for general-purpose CI workloads. ## Overview We offer a single VM type (Google Cloud Platform n1-standard-1 ) for the [GitLab SaaS Runners on Linux](https://docs.gitlab.com/ee/ci/runners/saas/linux_saas_runner.html), which puts us at a [competitive disadvantage](https://about.gitlab.com/direction/verify/runner_saas/#competitive-matrix) in the market. In addition, GitLab SaaS customers explicitly stated that the entry-level machine type impacts their productivity. In some cases, this has resulted in customers incurring additional costs and maintenance overhead. We confirmed this general negative trend in customer sentiment in the GitLab SaaS Shared Runner Adoption Barriers Study, published on 2022-06-22. Performance, especially the amount of computing needed to run jobs quickly, was ranked as the second most significant barrier to adopting GitLab SaaS Runners on Linux. The goal of this program is to launch new Google Compute machine types for the GitLab SaaS Runners on Linux. ### Business outcomes - The launch of this offer will have a net positive impact on the Verify stage monthly active users. - Reduces the competitive disadvantage in SaaS CI build fleet performance and capabilities compared to key competitors. ## Linked epics or issues - [Multiple Linux Runner Sizes](https://gitlab.com/groups/gitlab-com/gl-infra/-/epics/768) - [Set cost factor/tier for Premium Runners MVC offers](https://gitlab.com/gitlab-com/Product/-/issues/4561) - [Experiment with new private runner machine type](https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/issues/322726) ## Feedback issue We are gathering user and community input to determine what VM machine types to add to the GitLab SaaS Runners on Linux catalog.
