## Goal Find the GraphQL operations on gitlab.com most likely to have N+1 query patterns. Open one child issue per operation, so each can be investigated and fixed on its own. ## How the list was built The list comes from a Kibana Lens table over the Rails log index `pubsub-rails-inf-gprd*`. The filter is `json.controller: "GraphqlController" and json.action: "execute"`. Rows are grouped by `json.graphql.operation_name`. The window is the last 24 hours, 2026-09-15 to 2026-09-16. Link: https://log.gprd.gitlab.net/app/lens#/edit/75f74148-3cfb-4101-a75e-1e38f955b053?_g=h@725fc2c The counter is `json.db_main_replica_count`, the number of queries a request ran on the main database replica. The aggregated `json.db_count` field is not logged in production, because of the ops flag `omit_aggregated_db_log_fields`. ## Reading the numbers Each operation has two metrics. **N+1 risk** is `(p90 - p10) / p90` of the query count. A value near 1 means the busiest requests run far more queries than the cheapest ones. A value near 0 means the query count stays constant. This metric ranks operations. It does not prove an N+1 exists. A well batched page whose fixed cost varies by request can still score around 0.5. Anything at 0.85 or above is worth measuring. **Estimated savings per minute** is `(sum of query counts - request count × p10) / minutes in the window`. It treats p10 as the fixed cost of the operation, and everything above p10 as per-row cost that batching or preloading would remove. This is an estimate. Heavy tails inflate it. Operations whose fixed cost varies with permissions or arguments will overstate it too. Before opening this epic, three operations were checked by hand to calibrate the metrics. `workItemNotesByIid` scored 0.52 risk and zero savings, and a local probe found no per-row growth: all loaders were already batched. `getPipelineJobs` scored 0.92 risk and 5,832 savings per minute, and a local probe found 3 queries per build and 9 per bridge, none of them preloaded. `getSppLinkedGroups` scored 0.88 risk, and a local probe found 13 queries per group. The numbers track real behavior. ## Method for each issue 1. Find the operation's `.graphql` file in the repo. If the caller is an external client, such as an IDE extension or a third-party API user, reconstruct the selection from `json.graphql.used_fields` in Kibana instead. 2. Write a throwaway request spec that runs the exact query against a small page and a larger page. Record queries with `ActiveRecord::QueryRecorder.new(skip_cached: false)`, then diff the normalized SQL to see which queries grow per row. 3. Fix the growth with lookahead preloads on the resolver, `BatchLoader::GraphQL` on the field, or a policy preloader in `before_connection_authorization`, following the existing patterns in the codebase. 4. Add a permanent N+1 spec for the field. It should assert that per-table query counts don't grow with page size. 5. After deploy, confirm in the Lens table that the operation's savings estimate dropped. ## Progress Report <!-- Generated by scripts/progress_report.py. Weekend snapshots are labelled: dashboards get a fraction of their weekday traffic and cheaper requests, so compare weekdays with weekdays. `*` means the operation left the export, so its last known value is used. ## Operations Each column is dated with the end of its 24-hour window. The 2026-09-24 columns come from a second export of the same Lens table, taken after the savings formula lost its risk-threshold gate. That export ranks operations by p95 queries and keeps 500 rows, with a cutoff of 164 queries. "n/a" means the operation's p95 fell below 164 in that window, so it is no longer in the export. **Progress is measured by p95 queries and p95 DB seconds, not by risk or savings.** Risk is (p90 - p10) / p90, and for operations where most requests return an empty list, p10 is near zero and the ratio stays near 1 whatever the fix did. Savings collapses to total load in the same case, so it tracks traffic volume more than per-row cost. `getUserAgentFlows` is the example: after two fixes its p95 went from 156 to 49 queries and from 141 ms to 9 ms of database time, while risk stayed at 0.98.
