GnuTLS 2.12.23 was the last release before the ABI break in 3.0.0. Software using it cannot simply convert to gnutls 3.x.y due to ABI and API changes. Since 2.12.23 was released several issues have been found in GnuTLS' implementation of TLS 1.2 as well as many changes occurred in the way TLS is being expected to deploy (e.g., an SSL 3.0 record header cause incompatibility problems today). The purpose of this milestone is to make a release with all the known fixes in protocol and implementation in order to extend the lifetime of GnuTLS 2.12.x on the current Internet.
