New Git status bar on Mac OS X is out of sync (shows no branch)

Detailed steps to reproduce the problem:
- Open iTerm2
- Go to any folder
- View the git branch in the status bar (empty), compare that with
git branch
(current local branch is checked out) - Completely exit iTerm2 and start again, and it works OK for a little while

Status bar shows empty branch
What should have happened:
Branch should be shown
