Detect/underline hyperlinks and change cursor to hand on hover

Months ago I was originally looking into the "original" iTerm source to see how it handled urls, and cmd-clicking urls to activate.
What I wanted to do was to automatically detect URLs in text, and turn them into something resembling hyperlinks -- underlined, and have the mouse cursor change to a hand to indicate clickability.
Due to the old code, it looked like a cmd-click would look backwards and then scan forward, and consider that string of text/words a hyperlink, and trigger an "open URL" action. The problem with this was that you could cmd-click any word and it would try to open that in a browser.
I don't have a ton of Cocoa programming experience, but a brief Google reveals that "Data Detectors" could possibly handle this functionality.
