        Here are the steps I tried to take to reproduce:

        1. Close all windows except one
        2. cd /
        3. Cmd-Q, quit iterm2
        4. Relaunch iTerm2
        5. Window opens, is in root directory. Shows "Session Restored" banner.

        Did I do anything differently than you?

        I did exactly what you did, but I don't get a session restored dialog and it doesn't open the prior directory. I'm running Build 2.9.20150722-nightly and just reinstalled it to update to the latest version.

        Ensure Prefs>Advanced>Restore window contents at startup is set to Yes. This is the default, so I doubt it's changed. Also Make sure Close windows when quitting an app is off in System Prefs>General:
