The character was displaying fine on one machine, but not another. While troubleshooting, the working machine asked to update to Build 2.0.0.20141103. After the update, the lightning bolt character could no longer be displayed. My suspicion is that it is being treated as a single-byte character, rather than as a Unicode character.
