replace applescript interface with command line interface (ala tmux)

Applescript kind of sucks for obvious reasons. Is there a way we could have a command line interface to the iterm2 API (eg, get window contents, number of tabs, title etc) instead of having to use applescript? Eg, would work in a similar way as tmux/vim etc via escape codes, eg:
^b:set iterm.current_tab.title foobar
^b:get iterm.current_tab.contents | pbcopy
Doesn't have to be complete at first.
