Login incorrect

When I try to start a new shell I get a message saying "Login incorrect" and have to enter my username and password to get to the shell prompt. I'm using zsh at /bin/zsh, which is owned by root and is user, group and world executable. I've looked in iTerm2's preferences and can't find anything that refers to which user is used for starting new shells.
What steps will reproduce the problem?
Open a new shell in a window or a tab
What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
The shell logs in and a prompt is drawn
What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
